The best websites are the ones that you want to visit again, and again. How do you achieve this stature? The answer is by offering your website constant new information – interesting and ever-changing content.
Don’t forget that your website can also be used for internal office use as well. You can use the internet to support your own intranet – internal documents and mail – such as sales rep notes, orders, and client information. All of this can be viewed anywhere in the world! These intranets can store an incredible amount of critical information retrievable at the click of a mouse. If, however, your website is based solely on dynamic content then do the work most effectively.
Here are some points to remember on designing your web pages:
Any order options or contact information for the company must be viewable clearly and near the top of the page.
Make sure that any new visitors can understand what your business does in seconds. In other words, use the home page to make your business line obvious. State what you do!
Attract repeat visitors by frequently updating your site, or offering promotions or deals, or exciting videos or blogs.
Graphics – make them exciting and top quality but load quickly. People don’t like to wait!
Create pages that rely on low resolution or small monitors to cover as much of the audience as possible.
Make sure the colors enhance the page and make the experience enjoyable.
Other points:
Do not use frames in your html as the search engines will block your pages.
Your main product index (if you are a product/ecommerce site) should have 8 or less categories. More causes confusion. Then use sub-categories to branch out. You will need a product search option to quickly get a desired product.
Use light or white background to cause the least amount of eye strain.
Use the smallest page size (such as 13 inch monitor) to avoid problems with users having small monitors and needed to scroll.
Adobe flash is great but it must be supplemented by text and graphics as there are some people who never download the driver (and hence won’t see it!) or skip over it.
Make sure to use traffic analysis software (such as Google Analytics) to see which pages are popular, how long a visitor spends on a page, and where they jump/exit from the site.
Minimize the necessity of new software or drivers for your site as it may cost your potential business in the future – people in general do not like to download new drivers quickly on sites.
